For serious paddlers

British Canoe (BC) are the governing body of paddle sports in the UK. There’s an award for all abilities, once you’ve achieved the basics in either coaching or personal paddling the awards then become discipline specific.

CIWW are thrilled to be a British Canoeing course provider. Each course is fairly intense and follows a structured outline that covers a broad range of skills and theory. Each award is a pre-requisite for entry to the next although it can be possible to miss stages out if you have the required experience.

British Canoeing Activities List
Raft Guide (Stadium)

The British Canoeing Stadium Raft Guide award is aimed at anyone over the age of 18 who would like to take groups of people white water rafting on a man made artificial site such as CIWW, Nottingham, Lee Valley etc.

The British Canoeing Stadium Raft Guide Award enables the candidate to guide on the section of water they are assessed on, under the guidance of that stadium.

 

BC Stand Up Paddleboarding Support Module

This course is designed to assist anyone who wants to gain more knowledge about the specialist discipline of Stand Up Paddleboard (SUP).

The course introduces and explains the basic techniques and develops an understanding of SUP. The course is a mix of theory and practical activity to ensure everyone has time to try things out.

By the end of this module participants should have achieved the following learning outcomes:

 
  • Understand the worldwide development of the sport and the role of the various bodies on the field including British Canoeing.
  • Understand equipment design, size and modification to suit individual requirements.
  • Provide a background to the various disciplines within SUP paddling and the specific techniques that apply to each.
  • Understand the different types of board available, their characteristics and the different techniques used on them.
  • Understanding of handling an SUP efficiently.

 

2* Training & Assessment

The 2* is a prerequisite to obtaining an instructor award. This is an improvement award that helps paddlers to develop fundamental flat-water skills. The aim is to improve the understanding of how the paddle and boat react with the water. This award involves a range of paddlesport crafts, including both kayaking and canoeing.

3* Kayak Training & Assessment

 

If you’re looking to develop core skills and work on the fundamentals in grade 2, then this is great place to start.

 

3* Canoe Training & Assessment

If you’re looking to develop core skills and work on the fundamentals in grade 2 and open water, then this is great place to start.

3* Freestyle Assessment

The 3 star freestyle Award provides an introduction to the fundamental skills of freestyle paddlesport, from which it is possible to build more advanced skills.

Paddlesport Leader Training

British Canoeing Paddlesport Leader Training courses is way to support you in your development of the required skills. These courses typically cover leadership skills, and the associated personal skills, safety and rescue skills. As this training is delivered by British Canoeing Paddlesport Leader Providers, they will also be able to help you identify an appropriate action plan to support your progress towards a successful assessment.

 

The Paddlesport Leader is aimed at paddlers taking on formal leadership responsibilities in benign, sheltered water environments and aims to support Leaders to run safe, quality, enjoyable trips based on their group’s needs and aspirations.

Paddlesport Leader Assessment

The Paddlesport Leader is aimed at paddlers taking on formal leadership responsibilities in benign, sheltered water environments and aims to support Leaders to run safe, quality, enjoyable trips based on their group’s needs and aspirations.

White Water Kayak Leader Training

This course delivers the skill level required to lead a group of paddlers in appropriate locations, up to moderate white water conditions and to judge the conditions and the standard of the group and make appropriate decisions along with the need to modify plans as required.

The White Water Kayak Leader course content emphasises the application of strokes to achieve suitable techniques and boat control in real situations.

This award is for people who want to lead competent paddlers in a 'moderate' water environment.

White Water Kayak Leader Assessment

This course delivers the skill level required to lead a group of paddlers in appropriate locations, up to moderate white water conditions and to judge the conditions and the standard of the group and make appropriate decisions along with the need to modify plans as required.

The White Water Kayak Leader course content emphasises the application of strokes to achieve suitable techniques and boat control in real situations.

Canoe Leader Training

This course delivers the personal skill level required to lead a group of up to four solo canoe paddlers or three tandem canoe crews, on Moderate White Water and Moderate Inland Water

The Canoe Leader course content emphasises the application of a variety of techniques appropriate for moving water, and exposed open water, requiring the paddler to perform appropriate and effective manoeuvres in real situations.

Canoe Leader Assessment

This course delivers the personal skill level required to lead a group of up to four solo canoe paddlers or three tandem canoe crews, on Moderate White Water and Moderate Inland Water.

The Canoe Leader course content emphasises the application of a variety of techniques appropriate for moving water, and exposed open water, requiring the paddler to perform appropriate and effective manoeuvres in real situations.

Foundation Safety and Rescue Training (FSRT)

Fundamentally this course is designed for all paddlers irrespective of their chosen craft. The objective is to teach simple and safe skills that can provide the paddlers with the tools to solve simple paddling problems.

The award has two purposes:

To provide the paddler with the necessary skills which will enable them to ensure the safety of themselves and others

To provide the paddler with the appropriate rescue skills which can be used to help themselves and/or others in difficulty

White Water Safety & Rescue Training (WWSR)

Fundamentally this course is designed for all white-water paddlers. The objective is to teach simple and safe skills that can be applied appropriately.

Course Aims

· To improve individual’s awareness of safety skills in the river environment.

· To teach personal survival skills.

· To teach basic throw line rescue techniques.

· To understand the need for structure in an emergency situation

· To outline basic rescue protocols that prioritise the safety of the individual above all others.

· To introduce & develop the ‘clean rope’ principle

Paddlesport Instructor

This is the first step on the paddlesport coaching pathway. It will introduce you to the fundamentals of good coaching practice and help you to understand and coach technical and tactical aspects of your sport. The course is run over four days, which can be spread over two weekends

Core Coach Training

The emphasis of the training is to: 'observe, analyse and implement'. This means experimenting with new coaching styles and techniques. Basically, it's about putting theory into practice, giving you foundation skills and understanding, along with the confidence to transfer them into a variety of coaching situations. 

Discipline Specific Coach Training - Sheltered Water

This course takes the theories and principles covered in the Core Coach Training course and applies them to craft end environment for the Sheltered Water Coach Award.

Discipline Specific Coach Assessment - Sheltered Water

This award is for paddlers who would like to coach on sheltered water, this can either be completed in kayak, canoe, or a dual disciplne assessment covering both canoe and kayak. 

Discipline Specific Coach Training - Whitewater Canoe

This course takes the theories and principles covered in the Core Coach Training course and applies them specifically to coaching canoeing on moderate whitewater.

Discipline Specific Coach Assessment - White Water Canoe

This course takes the theories and principles covered in the Core Coach Training course and applies them specifically to coaching canoeing on moderate whitewater.

Registration with British Canoeing is required before assessment. This will also give you access to e-Learning which needs to be completed before the assessment day.

 

Discipline Specific Coach Training - Open Water Canoe

This course takes the theories and principles covered in the Core Coach Training course and applies them specifically to coaching canoeing on moderate open water.

Discipline Specific Coach Assessment - Open Water Canoe

This course takes the theories and principles covered in the Core Coach Training course and applies them specifically to coaching canoeing in open water.

Registration with British Canoeing is required before assessment. This will also give you access to e-Learning which needs to be completed before the assessment day.

 

Discipline Specific Coach Training - Freestyle

This course takes the theories and principles covered in the Core Coach Training course and applies them specifically to coaching freestyle kayaking.

Discipline Specific Coach Assessment - Freestyle Kayak

This award is for paddlers who would like to coach and progress freestyle paddlers. 

Discipline Specific Coach Training - White Water Kayak

This course takes the theories and principles covered in the Core Coach Training course and applies them specifically to coaching kayak on moderate whitewater.

Discipline Specific Coach Assessment - White Water Kayak

This course takes the theories and principles covered in the Core Coach Training course and applies them specifically to coaching kayak on moderate whitewater.

This 2 day course is required before accessing the 1 day discipline specific assessment.

Coaching the Mind (Intermediate)

This module is aimed at coaches, parents and paddlers who are interested in using psychology to improve performance in paddlesport.
The module begins with a quick recap of the topics covered in the Coaching the Mind Foundation Module, it then moves on to explore attentional focus, imagery, and arousal. Individual analysis methods, the use of self-talk and pre-performance routines are discussed, and explained. While performance profiling tools and the use of goal setting are also covered. The module finishes by exploring motivational factors, motivational climate and attributions.
